Do you want to learn to dance? Are you getting ready for your first dance lesson? If so, we know it can feel confusing, overwhelming, and even a little scary. But the key is not to stress out. The Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Durham is here to help.

We’re going to tell you what you can expect at your first dance lesson so that you can learn the dance moves and gain the confidence to come back every week for your dance classes at Fred Astaire.

How to Survive Your First Dance Lesson at Fred Astaire Dance Studio

Be On Time

You don’t want to just be on time for your dance lesson, you want to be a little early. Your dance instructor will appreciate your punctuality and eagerness to learn. If you do anticipate being late or won’t be able to show up for your lesson, please call or email us.

Wear Comfortable Shoes and Clothes

If you’re not feeling comfortable in your clothes and shoes, you can’t expect to become a good dancer. It doesn’t matter if you’re learning salsa dance, swing dance, or taking private lessons to learn how to cha cha, being comfortable is an essential key to success in dancing.

The most important aspect of being comfortable at your dance lessons is your shoes. Don’t bring your high heels. A good pair of old sneakers or flats will work just fine.

With all the steps and movements involved with dancing, we recommend wearing light and cool clothing. Even with the air conditioning on, your body temperature will rise.

Be Prepared

During your first dance lesson at Fred Astaire, we will spend a portion of the lesson talking about the types of dances that you want to learn. We’ll also talk about the songs you want to dance to, and we’ll go over what you could expect from future dance lessons and classes. Having an idea whether you want to learn Latin dancing or other popular dances will give you more time to try your moves in your dance classes.

Open Up

Keep your eyes, ears, and mind open. Watch your dance instructor. They will show you each move, step by step. Listen to them. They will teach you new words such as leading, following, or even the various ways to turn. Keep an open mind. In dancing, you will learn a new level of closeness that you have never experienced before.

Be Patient

You’re not going to be the king or queen of the ballroom after just one lesson. Be patient. Being an experienced dancer takes time. Our lessons are taught step by step and you will learn each step over time.

Being an experienced dancer takes time. Don’t feel bad if you accidentally step on your dance partner’s toes. Focus on one move at a time. With the guidance of your dance instructor and enough practice, you’ll be waltzing across the dance floor in no time.

Pay Attention to the Teacher

If you want to get the most out of your lessons, pay attention to the teacher. This is how you’re going to learn. Treat it as you would any other lesson and you’re bound to succeed.

Don’t Worry About Having a Partner

There is no partner needed to take a dance lesson. Many people get focused on having a partner and can’t enjoy their dance lesson. Just think about the steps and becoming the best dancer you can be.

Ask Questions

Many people are afraid to ask questions if they don’t understand a move or want to see something demonstrated again.

If you need further explanation about a move, don’t be afraid to ask. There’s no such thing as a dumb question when it comes to learning how to dance. Our instructors are here for you.

Go at Your Own Pace

If you’re taking group dance classes remember that everyone will go at their own pace. Don’t try to keep up with everyone else. Enjoy your dance experience and take your time with your dancing moves.

Dance Like No One is Watching

You’ve heard the saying before, but when you go for a dance lesson, really dance like no one is watching. Many people get nervous that everyone will be staring at them in group dance lessons.

In reality, everyone is focused on their own moves that they won’t be paying any attention to you. Focus on your feet and your moves and everything will be just fine!

Have Fun

This is by far the most important part of surviving your first dance lesson. Relax and have fun with it! This will not only help you survive your first dance lesson but will have you coming back for more.
